Holidays are when there is fun, laughter, and love in the air. Friends and families get together and share gifts and great times. While this is a picture that we all like to believe in, there is a significant percentage of the American population that labors under a cloud of depression and anxiety at this time of the year.
You may not know that, even if you see them in the elevator or in the next cubicle in the office or at a holiday party. Chances are that these people do not wish to share their struggle with anyone else because they fear being misjudged for being a spoilsport. Financial pressures at this time of the year, unrealistic expectations, and excessive commitments exacerbate what is already a difficult time of the year for many people who are struggling with the cold, dark and cloudy days. Excessive eating particularly carbohydrates, drinking alcoholic beverages, lack of adequate sleep all contribute to this struggle and at some level are also the consequence of the underlying depression and anxiety. For many people, the start of New Year only cements this feeling of loneliness and melancholy now that there are no more bright lights to hide behind! Sounds depressing, right?
Now you don’t have to spend the rest of the year feeling this way as there is help available. For starters, setting realistic expectations, reaching out to dear ones, and finding inexpensive ways to enjoy the good times help.
The question is what happens when you have done all of those and still are unable to shake the melancholy and anxiety away?
This is where we would like to help. We would like to partner with you to identify areas that needs help including, sleep problems, overeating, weight gain, use of alcohol, among others. Of course we realize that these problems do not arise in and by themselves and are usually indicative of underlying emotional struggles which we again can help with. We believe in channelizing you into a new you with your efforts and our guidance. We have a Board Certified psychiatrist who has years of experience managing all sorts of issues and will target your problems with therapy, medication, and a combination thereof. We also have a health coach on board. She and the client discover the area that needs attention and a plan is formulated to implement it.
The client is held accountable for all their progress towards a goal set by them. Our health coach stands right by her client and together they achieve what is important for the client. She will accompany her clients to the grocery store to buy healthy foods and share healthy recipes, nudge them to go to the gym and coordinate with a personal trainer, encourage meditation and so forth.
Cooking demonstrations are also part of the meetings. Remember happiness is internal and external, so mind and body are treated to achieve the goal.
